The Georgia State Capitol building was evacuated after a gas leak in downtown Atlanta Wednesday morning.Piedmont Avenue is currently closed near MLK Jr. Drive, the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department said.

The Atlanta Fire Rescue Department and Atlanta Gas are on the scene of a large gas leak in downtown Atlanta. Buildings in the area include the state capitol building and Georgia State MARTA Station. According to the Georgia Department of Public Safety,

ATLANTA — Several roads in front of the Georgia Capitol Building are shut down as crews investigate a gas leak. According to the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department, crews are taking readings of air quality nearby now, but so far, a spokesman said no gas readings had been detected.

"All buildings in the area are safe and have been cleared to reopen," Atlanta Gas Light said in a statement. However, repairs continue.

People were ushered out of the Georgia Capitol around 10:15 a.m. The James H. “Sloppy” Floyd Building, which houses other government offices, may also be evacuated.
