The death toll from Thursday's mass rush into Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta from Morocco ‌reached at least 72 on Sunday as five more bodies were found along Ceuta's coast, officials said.

According to Spanish authorities, about 50,000 people had crossed ‌into Ceuta by land and sea from Thursday in an unprecedented surge at one of the European Union's only land borders with Africa.

The crisis in Ceuta, on the African coast, instantly became a touchstone in the global migrant debate as suspicions swirled that the viral incident was orchestrated.

At least 57 people have died in the massive migration surge at the border between Morocco and the Spanish exclave of Ceuta.

Authorities said between 50,000 and 60,000 migrants crossed into Ceuta over two days before the influx subsided.
