Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals is closing in on the NHL goals record of 894 held by Wayne Gretzky. Ovechkin has 884 goals and needs 10 to tie and 11 to break the record.

With that goal, Ovechkin is now just 10 away from tying Hockey Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky for most all-time (894). It was his 31st goal of the season in a 3-1 loss, Washington's third straight, but with 22 games remaining in the regular season, it's a brighter spot than most think.

Ovechkin commenced his career with two goals in his first game on NHL ice when Washington Capitals faced off against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Oct. 5, 2005. Since then, he has racked up tons of goals, so much so that he's now on track to pass Wayne Gretzky’s goal record of 894 this season.
