NFL players suffered the fewest concussions in a season in 2024 since the league began tracking data nine years ago.

The NFL had a total of 182 concussions during games and practices in both the preseason and regular season, representing a 17% drop from 2023.

The league on Thursday said that the 43 percent reduction rate on kickoffs meant the new format had worked as intended.

Player concussions dropped 17% this season compared to last, reaching a record low amid improvements in helmet safety, the introduction of helmet covers known as guardian caps and changes to the rules governing kickoffs,

The NFL has gone to great lengths in recent years to improve player safety, specifically as it pertains to head injuries. It appears that the league's efforts are paying dividends, as the NFL has announced that the 2024 preseason included the fewest number of concussions for a full preseason since tracking began in 2015.

For the first time since they began tracking concussion data in 2015, the NFL recorded its fewest number of concussions this past season. 182 total concussions took place during games and practice, which is a remarkable number if you consider (or if data was ever available for) the total number of practice and game snaps players experience.

The league announced on Thursday it recorded the lowest number of player concussions in 2024 — over preseason/regular season practices and games — since at least 2015 when the NFL standardized league-wide electronic medical records.
