Firefighters were battling multiple wildfires that erupted across South and North Carolina overnight amid windy and dry conditions, authorities said.

Wind-whipped wildfires have prompted evacuations of people in the Carolinas as at least 170 fast-moving blazes have scorched more than 4,200 acres of tinder-dry vegetation, threatening homes and businesses Sunday.

Multiple wildfires raged across North and South Carolina on Sunday, prompting officials to order evacuations and open emergency shelters as dry conditions and gusty winds impacted much of the Eastern Seaboard.
