On January 20, 1977, Jimmy Carter was inaugurated as the thirty-ninth president of the United States. The White House Historical Association is a private, nonprofit organization founded in 1961 by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy with a mission to protect, preserve, and provide public access to the rich history of America’s Executive Mansion.

The association’s current president, Stewart McLaurin, has served since 2014, [31] focused on expanding its audiences, educational programming, development base and impact. He is the author of James Hoban: Designer and Builder of the White House. [32]
