This mane is lovely to plait - it looks thicker than it actually is, because of the frizzy texture. My favourite style of forelock plait to do - Called a Dutch or Reverse Plait, you pass each section of hair under (rather than over) the previous braid. You get a more lifted looking plait - I personally think this looks nicer than the French style. To finish I use a set of forceps to pull the tail through the centre of the plait.
