Japan has only small mountains? In general the Japan skiing from the lifts has 500-900m vertical. Not a lot compared to the Alps, but similar to most resorts in Canada and US. Biggest vertical in Japan is in Kagura with 1200m vertical. But if you go ski touring you can get more, and also get away from the crowd.
