For the class final, the all-female crew of wildfire students dug fire line, rolled hose and burned slash piles in the eastern Oregon snow. The live burn exercise was the climax of the second annual Women in Wildland Fire Boot Camp, a BLM recruitment and retention tool that organizers hope will add diversity to the applicant pool for wildfire jobs. The boot camp is really a paid training opportunity, part classroom and part field work, for women to become certified for federal fire jobs, an indu

Moon Reservoir in our eastern Oregon Burns District is full and spilling! The water level fluctuates with the amount of spring run-off and this year we are overwhelmed with abundance. The site provides quality sport fishing and recreational activities, and there is a loading dock for small size boats, parking, and a restroom. Day use only. Camping is not permitted. Planning to visit? Be safe! Always wear a Personal Floatation Device when on the water and stay away from the spillway and upstream

BLM designates area to protect the endangered Pacific Northwest Sasquatch 🌲🦍👣 The BLM is designating a new Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) to protect the Pacific Northwest Sasquatch (Gigantopithecus canadensis) following an extensive land use planning process. The species was long believed to be extinct. However, after several Sasquatch were positively identified on BLM public lands in eastern Oregon and southern Washington, the BLM launched a planning process that identified AC

It’s winter! Which means it’s time for prescribed burns. Prescribed burning is highly dependent on favorable temperature, moisture, and wind conditions: we will only burn if conditions are safe. And we do our best to minimize smoke impacts to nearby communities. Prescribed burns are completed in cooperation with the Oregon Department of Forestry Smoke Management Plan and the Washington Department of Natural Resources Smoke Management Plan. 📸 Lisa McNee, BLM | BLM Oregon & Washington

View from above a prescribed burn this past week in southwest Oregon, near Crater Lake National Park – video: BLM Lakeview Crew 7 Firefighters ignited about 360 acres of ponderosa pine forest Monday in the Fremont-Winema National Forest. The controlled fire, south of Oregon Route 138 and west of Diamond Lake, helps maintain forest health and also reduces the amount of burnable fuel for the upcoming wildfire season. Prescribed fires only happen when conditions like temperature, humidity and wind

Celebrate International Dark Sky Week—right here in Oregon! 🌌 Oregon is home to the largest International Dark Sky Sanctuary on Earth, the Oregon Outback Dark Sky Sanctuary. With 2.5 million acres of stunning stargazing land (and 1.7 million acres managed by BLM’s Lakeview District), this is where the stars truly shine. On a clear night, you could see up to 15,000 stars—a magical contrast to the 500 visible in most cities. There’s something special about seeing the stars the way they were meant

Prescribed burning, or controlled burning, is an essential tool in maintaining healthy landscapes. Fire has always been a natural part of the ecological process. In the early 1990s, land management agencies sought to suppress all fires in an effort to preserve timber supply and other natural resources. Fire suppression policy was effective but over the decades increased the amount of vegetation (alive and dead) on the landscape. Increased vegetation led to the added risk of uncharacteristically

BLM fire crews burned piles of cut juniper trees in eastern Oregon last week as part of a sage grouse habitat restoration project. Greater sage grouse, prairie birds known for their flamboyant mating rituals, live among the sagebrush of the West and have suffered from juniper encroachment over the last 100 years. Large juniper trees out-compete sagebrush for the already-minimal water resources, and sage grouse fear of predators hiding in the tree canopy, often causing them to abandon traditional

Cruising on the alkali dirt of the Alvord Desert, with its never-ending grid of erratic fracture lines, is quite different from the typical nature drive. The playa, as it is called, was once a 200-foot-deep lakebed, and is now so typically smooth and dry that land speed record attempts take place in the isolated southeast Oregon location (story below). The 6-mile-long by 11-mile-long desert of beige palettes stretches far enough to create mirages, with Steens Mountain to the west and the Pueblo

Last month, we completed a wild horse gather at the South Steens Herd Management Area near Frenchglen, Oregon. The area can sustainably support up to 300 horses. Prior to the gather, there were 1,150 adults and over 200 foals. To restore a thriving, natural ecological balance and to support the land and wildlife in the face of drought, we gathered about 750 horses. About 50 of these will be returned to the range. Horses from this gather were taken to Oregon's Wild Horse & Burro Off-Range Corral

Fire is an essential, natural process, having shaped the landscape for thousands of years, releasing, and recycling nutrients from vegetation back to the soil. Prescribed fire reduces buildup of hazardous fuels, improves wildlife habitat, and reduces the risk of high-severity wildfire. | BLM Oregon & Washington
