Waves crashed on the beach as strong winds blew across a massive wilderness lake in northern Canada. My brother Ted and I had over 40km to travel by canoe this day so we put ourselves to work and using pulleys, cordage, poles and a tarp, we managed to rig a sale for our canoes. The previous day we’d rigged our canoes into a sturdy catamaran to deal with the large waves. With the addition of the sale, we were pretty confident as we headed out into the waves and wind. So, before I start slogging through the bush with the canoe over my head, I put on some Muskol 30% Deet Insect Repellant. I always keep some in an accessible spot like in the little pouch you see on my bag here. Wait for it….Sometimes things don’t go as planned. This was one of those times. Day 1 of my trip down the remote Pukaskwa River (a tributary of Lake Superior’s north shore) things went a little wrong. Thankfully were able to unpin and fix the canoe which had a smashed seat, broken carrying yoke and torn spray deck.
