The de Havilland Vampire was the first jet aircraft to be landed on an aircraft carrier. Early trials carried-out by Captain Eric Winkle Brown showed that landing jet aircraft aboard carriers was a lot more dangerous than landing piston aircraft on carriers, as earlier jet engines took a lot longer to spool-up when compared with piston engines, that could provide instantaneous power and the ability to wave off if unhappy with an approach.
